Job Summary

Develops and applies practical skills and learns tools to assist with identifying cyber security concerns affecting campus systems. Learns how to create, monitor and maintain safeguards to ensure the cyber security of campus systems. Please note this position is an apprenticeship within Kennesaw State University Information Technology Services department; it does not guarantee permanent employment with the University.

Responsibilities

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: -
1. Collaborates with cybersecurity and UITS staff to resolve computer security incidents and vulnerability compliance
2. Learns and utilizes cyber defense tools for continuous monitoring and analysis of system activity to identify malicious activity
3. Assists with analyzing security alerts from various sources within the enterprise
4. Assists with determining possible causes of security alerts
5. Assists with documenting and escalating incidents including event's history, status and potential impact for further action that may cause ongoing and immediate impact to the environment

Able to handle multiple tasks or projects at one time meeting assigned deadlines

KNOWLEDGE
KEY LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
Will acquire experience with:
Vulnerability management solution(s)
Security information and event management tools and processes incident response processes
Computer networking concepts, communications, and protocols
Regulations pertaining to storage and handling of confidential data, to include PII, FERPA, etc.
Intrusion Detection System (IDS)/Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) tools, technologies, and applications
Recognizing and categorizing types of vulnerabilities and associated attacks
Reviewing logs to identify evidence of past intrusions

Learn about:
Common attack vectors
Operating system command-line tools and network tools to identify vulnerabilities
Adversarial tactics, techniques, and procedures
Cyber-attack stages (e.g., reconnaissance, scanning, enumeration, gaining access, escalation of privileges, maintaining access, network exploitation, covering tracks)
Performing root cause analysis

Learn to:
Conduct vulnerability scans and recognize vulnerabilities in security systems
Interpret information collected by network tools (e.g., Nslookup, Ping, and Traceroute)
Accurately define incidents, problems, and events in the trouble ticketing system
Identify systemic security issues based on the analysis of vulnerability and configuration data

SKILLS
Interpersonal, initiative, teamwork, problem solving, independent judgment, organization, communication (verbal and written), time management, project management and presentation skills
Proficient with computer applications and programs associated with the position (i.e., Microsoft Office suite)
Attention to detail and follow up skills
Customer service skills and phone and e-mail etiquette
