Job Description Summary
Position Summary
Ai2D is the Center For AI And Data Science For Integrated Diagnostics; it is part of the Department of Radiology at The Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania (https://ai2d.med.upenn.edu/). Major goals of AI2D are to 1) accelerate discovery using biomedical imaging and 2) to advance personalized medicine with clinical translation of neuroimaging processing. To do this, we leverage advanced imaging techniques applied to imaging modalities including multi-modal MRI.
This position is for a software engineer responsible for development and maintenance of software pipelines for image analysis within the Ai2D Center and deployed by the Department of Radiology. The applicant will be responsible for software installation, software packaging, writing software or updating code originating as research prototypes, running and testing pipelines, and integrating pipelines with clinical systems. Development of pipelines may include training of Deep Learning and other machine learning models.
The preferred candidate will make a direct contribution to medical practice by applying good software engineering practices to take algorithms and software from a research stage and implement them in automated pipelines deployed in the clinical setting. To succeed in the highly collaborative environment, excellent interpersonal and communication skills are required. Superb technical skills including proficiency in programming languages (Python and/or C++), experience with software containerization (Docker, Singularity), familiarity with software development tools (IDEs, debuggers, version control systems Git/GitHub), solid understanding of operating system concepts, and experience with high performance computing systems (job scheduling, parallel processing) are a prerequisite. Experience with neuroimaging tools (AFNI, FSL, ANTs, FreeSurfer), and knowledge of web programming and cloud platforms (AWS, Azure) is a plus. Skills developed in this role are highly transferrable and will accelerate professional growth in either academia or the technology industry.
The developer will interact directly with researchers at Penn to determine functional requirements and propose and implement innovative technical solutions and must be able to communicate effectively with stakeholders at various levels (physicians, imaging researchers, and information systems/security teams). He or she must ensure adherence to technical, quality assurance, data integrity and security standards and guide team members and researchers in the pipeline development process.
